North Miami, Florida is located in the northeast corner of
Dade County, bordering Broward County,
Florida, and covers a landmass of ten
square miles. Of those 10 miles, 1.55 miles
are water, accounting for the city’s
recreation area on and along Biscayne Bay.
This area was originally known as Arch
Creek. It was incorporated and became the
town of Miami Shores, and in 1927 it became
the City of North Miami.
North Miami, Florida is a multi-ethnic
community known for its large
Haitian-American population. Running on a
platform that concentrated on local crime,
traffic problems and flood insurance policy,
voters in 2001, made
Josaphat (Joe) Celestin the first
Haitian American mayor with his victory in
North Miami, FL.
According to the 2000
U.S. Census Report and estimates through
2003, North Miami’s population increased by
19.4% from 1990 to 2000. The homogenous
multi-ethnicity of the community of North
Miami shows up statistically with 48.5 % of
the population being foreign born and 65.1%
of the households speaking a language other
than English as their primary language.
Local businesses are 36.7% minority owned as
of the 1997 Census, further exemplifying the
representation of the local population in
the business community.
North Miami’s 50.5% owner-occupied
residential buildings reinforce the city’s
claim of affordable quality housing. While
you’ll find some towering condo developments
in North Miami, FL, the majority of the
available housing is single story, single
family homes. Affordability with quality is
the main theme and one of the greatest
advantages of living in North Miami, Florida.
The North Miami Parks & Recreation
Department maintains a
Youth Soccer program and modern playing
fields. The City of North Miami organizes
and supports a number of community events
including the
Winternational Thanksgiving Day Parade
and the Miss North Miami Scholarship
Pageant, with the
Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce.
With a subtropical climate, and miles of
sandy beaches close by, North Miami, FL is a
haven for outdoor recreational activities
such as running, bicycling, tennis, and
boating.
North Miami, FL is home to the North Miami
Campus of the
Johnson & Wales University, one of the
most distinguished Culinary Arts education
programs in the world. The University offers
state-of-the-art laboratory kitchen
facilities, academic classrooms, a library,
and housing to over 400 students from all
over the world. The city also hosts the
North Miami Campus of
Florida International University.
Additionally, the city is in close proximity
to the North Campus of
Miami-Dade Community College, which
offers a variety of technical and
professional undergraduate programs. The
Dade County School System provides for
North Miami High School as well as two
Junior High Schools and Six Elementary
Schools.
Florida is highly dedicated to tourism, yet North Miami, FL
concentrates its services on its own
residents first. Even the well-managed
recreational facilities here are geared
toward the residents of this vibrantly
beautiful Oceanside city.
